Information for Pool Owners

I am a Certified Pool Operator... Why your pool Man should be also!

Amoeba in Swimming Pools

I have been asked by friends about protecting themselves from amoeba in their swimming pools. The best answer I can give them is Don’t Worry. If your pool is kept clean and has free chlorine available at all times you should be safe.

I have tried to find some information for those that worry about these things. If you have a source for related data, please forward it to me.

At the bottom of this article are some links to information about disinfecting pools and the specific amoeba causing the deaths locally. My interpretation of the available data is that the organism is readily killed by normally

recommended free chlorine levels in swimming pools.  When you look at the charts you will find deactivation times for several organisms. Please consider the entirety of the data before jumping to any conclusions. As an Example, one of the most difficult organisms we deal with as Pool Operators is Cryptosporidium. When diarrhea, occurs in a Pool, the health department and state have issued regulations on how to disinfect the pool. If you look at the charts on these web sites, it would appear to take almost seven days to kill this organism. Following regulations we will close the pool and super chlorinate. We can kill the organism in just 8 hours. We will later use chemicals to reduce the chlorine level and open the pool the next day.

The amoeba in question does not seem to have the same resistance to chlorine. Free Chlorine levels of 2- 4 ppm will kill this bug. These are quite normal levels. Also, this bug will not be introduced into your swimming pool in such a manner or in large numbers.

Please note that the sources vary from The American CDC, to researchers, to Australian water quality managers.
