Information for Pool Owners

I am a Certified Pool Operator... Why your pool Man should be also!

Resurface your pool, new marcite, diamond brite or pebble tech, sounds expensive. I have seen pools where the finish will literally crumble in your hands. I have also seen pools with calcium deposits that are forming on the sides. It sounds pretty bad,  but it is even worse when you start signing checks to fix these problems.

The better solution is proper maintenance. If your water chemistry is maintained properly you can avoid some of these problems. It will save you money, and add to your enjoyment of the pool if you can change the way you look at Pool Maintenance.

First is Swimmer Safety. Keeping organics like algae under control with a sanitizer like chlorine is paramount. Proper chlorine levels will keep diseases from being passed on to swimmers. No matter how clean your pool, you can't  prevent the wind  from carrying micro organisms into your pool.

Every one seems to naturally understand  this part of water chemistry.

Second is protecting your Pool. What seems to be less intuitive, is how water chemistry can effect the

finish of your swimming pool. Qualities of water that we commonly measure are of course Chlorine level, Ph, Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness and Total Dissolved Solids. If you add a thermometer to your bag of pool tools, you have what you need to take it to the next level. If you maintain your own pool, you are

either taking these measurements yourself or you take water down for testing. Either way, you have been told that there is a normal range for these readings. Just having each of these within norms is only half the job. These readings affect each other. If you take it one step further and calculate the saturation index, you can make minor adjustments to these levels that will keep your water friendly to your pool finish.

Inside the manual that comes with your test kit are usually instructions on how to do this calculation.  I first learned of Saturation Index during my certified pool operator class. It can explain a lot of what you see going on in your pool. I highly recommend trying this from time to time, especially if you are having problems that you can not otherwise explain.
