I am a Certified Pool Operator... Why
your pool Man should be also!
“What
should I expect from my pool service?”
Your service should provide a safe, healthy
swimming environment, while simultaneously protecting your
pool investment. Your service provider should be competent and
responsible. As a
certified pool operator, I believe all pool
professionals should be also. They should look at the entirety
of the pool system and be able to make responsible decisions
about pool safety and maintenance. Pool operator training
provides knowledge and evidence that an operator understands
the systems involved.
Most people don’t look at a pool and see the
potential hazards. They see the enjoyment of good times spent
with family and friends. Well, there are plenty of hazards,
most are preventable. Some hazards can be created
inadvertently by something as simple as leaving valves in the
wrong position. Your pool service should be able to look at
your pool and give you some suggestions, or maybe confirm that
everything looks good. Either way, the
|
owner should think about these issues
themselves. Make sure that you hire some one that will be
conscientious and take the job seriously.
Starting
with pool water chemistry, RWI, or Recreational water Illness
is our first concern. Swimmer safety is primary. Algae growth
is a concern, but more importantly we want to prevent disease
from spreading to people in the water. We put chlorine in the
water for this reason. The chlorine needs to be available in
the water at all times. Seeing algae occur is an indication
that there isn’t free chlorine in the water.
With most
service providers, you may contract for full service or just
for chemical maintenance. What you should expect from both
types of service visits is that your water will be tested for
Chlorine level and ph. If your man just walks up and drops
a test agent in the water, chances are that they only know
whether or not chlorine is present, but not how much. The test
agent in most kits requires a buffer agent be added to sample
water before an accurate measurement can be made.
If your
service does not actually test the ph, they may be wasting
their time and your money. Most pool owners don’t realize that
if the ph goes
